Which Size HDTV is Right for My Room?

With standard-definition TVs, the rule used to be that viewers would feel comfortable watching a set from a distance of 3 to 6 times the screen size in inches. With HDTV, the resolution is so much better that you can sit closer to a larger TV without noticing the pixels. So with HDTVs, the rule tends to be you can sit anywhere from 1.5 to 3 times the screen size (in inches) for the best experience.

If you know the size of the room you have already, where you want to sit, and where your new HDTV should go once you get it, you can figure out the size HDTV you should get.

  • Minimum size = Viewing distance/3
  • Maximum size=Viewing distance/1.5

I bought this TV to watch the world soccer matches in South Africa and it didn't disappoint. It arrived the day before the matches, as promised, and is very clear and easy to view. I highly recommend it, and Amazon.com.

This TV looks fine and was easy to set up. The only issue I have with it is that the maximum volume is really quiet. The only audio out is a digital optical link, so I'll need to buy a stereo receiver with an optical input.

I've owned this TV for several months -- purchased from a local Video Only. It has a flaw in its HDMI firmware, which causes the audio to become severely garbled after about an hour of viewing. Panasonic acknowledges the problem, but to date, they have not been able to fix it. I downloaded and tried to install the updated firmware from their website, but the install failed. They then sent me an SD card, which also failed to load. My computer had no problem reading the card and copying the firmware update. They then informed me that 30 customers had seen the bogus card read error. Today they sent me a second card, which my TV was also unable to read. The file date on the firmware, which my computer can read perfectly, is two months older than the previous version. Clearly, Panasonic has serious customer support problems.

On 07/06/2010 I received a message from Panasonic customer support telling me that the "card read error" I was receiving meant that I had already installed the firmware update. The CSR went on to say that, since I had installed the update, I no longer had the audio problem. I still have the audio problem and after calling the rep a dozen or more times, he has never answered his phone or returned my call.

On 07/14/2010 Panasonic sent me a third SD card, which also did not load. Upon calling back, they told me that this is a known problem with the firmware and my case got escalated to engineering. I was told this same thing two weeks ago and two card sets ago. I have attempted to load FIVE different update files -- two from their websites and three on cards they sent me -- with no success. The problem remains unfixed after ten weeks!

On 07/18/2010 Panasonic sent me an email, telling me that the card should be readable, and asking me to send them the error code I received if it didn't load. I already sent this info over two weeks ago. So, despite the fact that the last CSR I spoke with said the problem was escalated to engineering, I'm still being told that there's no problem with the firmware on the SD card. Insanity is repeating the same behavior and expecting a different result.

On 07/27/2010 I finally spoke with a CSR who was SUPERB! He listened to everything I had gone through and then hand-walked my file up to a higher level of support. On 07/29/2010 a member of this team sent me a detailed email indicating that I was the first person who reported this problem, that is, the inability to load the HDMI firmware update. The HDMI problem is fixed (I've read several reviews elsewhere that confirm this), but I can't load the update. Their email summarized everything they knew about the problem, including a detailed explanation of the errors codes I had been receiving. They asked for more specific information from me, which I provided. Over the next several days we exchanged several emails. I took my TV to a local repair shop and Panasonic assigned a support team to work with the folks there to get my TV updated properly.

On 07/30/2010 I sent a detailed email to the support team with my analysis of the problem, and suggesting a specific area of the TV's code that they should examine for a bug. They immediately responded that they had forwarded my message "to our product and design engineers for review." I should mention that I have a degree in Computer Science and several decades of software and firmware development experience. I am very pleased that Panasonic finally understands the problem I'm having, and that they've assigned a very competent team to look into it.

On 08/04/2010 I went to pick up my TV from the local Panasonic authorized repair shop. I asked the tech who worked on it what he had done and he told me that he had installed a new main board (A Board). I asked him if it was fixed, and he said, "I don't know. I don't have time to test them." I asked him if he had installed the firmware updates and he didn't know what I was talking about. I asked him if he had spoken with Panasonic, and he said no. I told him of my ten week hassle with Panasonic Customer Support, and he knew nothing about it, in spite of the fact that I had delivered a detailed memo of the problem I had been having when I brought the TV. He was utterly clueless, and basically could not have cared less. I brought the TV home and was able to install both updates on the new motherboard in about ten minutes. I have owned this TV for 14 weeks, and it finally works correctly; the HDMI problem is solved.

This has been a review of the abysmal experience I've had with Panasonic Customer Support. When I've used the TV for awhile, I'll write a review of it.
